THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
Squeeze (1973)
Polydor
Produced by DOUG YULE
Not at all the miserable dreck you expect (and even hope for), this is actually pretty harmless... and dull. SQUEEZE is the infamous post-Lou Reed (and, for that matter, post-Sterling Morrison/post-Maureen Tucker) Velvet Underground album, only released in limited quantities and never in the United States. The only actual band member here is Doug Yule. He is obviously talented, but this a rush job forced on him by the band's enterprising manager, Steve Sesnick. A few of the songs are catchy but none will really stay with you, and this just isn't a Velvet Underground album. That's the justification given for the fact that the band and many discographies essentially deny the record's existence, but still no excuse. It's out there, so it should be at least acknowledged, though I wouldn't recommend seeking it out.
