AT OUR FINEST

performed on:

This dramatic bass-heavy tune tended to inflict audiences on the Information Tour with an urge to dance around like idiots but remained unidentified for a while and was even thought to be a cover at one point. Its placement as the penultimate song on many Diplomacy shows led many to believe it would be on the next Plaastik record, but this wasn't to be. As it turned out, the band spent a week preparing it for a single release to promote their MCA best-of collection, MEAT, adding double-reed horn and lots and lots of feedback to make "pop bliss," as Jeff Jooce said. These sessions were unusually productive for the band, getting all sorts of supplemental tidbits for MEAT ready in an insane amount of time. This song was almost lost in the hoopla over all the material scattered around in 1997, especially since it was issued mere days before "To Know Him is to Love Him" became a monstrous #1 hit. Go figure: "At Our Finest" didn't even reach #170, despite an amusing video with the band making fun of classic B-movies. It's not even much of a logical progression from ON SUCH A NIGHT, but then, neither is the followup LP.

there are good days
there are catastrophes
but at our finest
we fly

hard times are past
hard times are comin'
but good times are here
always

they crash
we fly
they crash
we fly

when it's bad I look at you
and I know it'll be all right
when it's good I look at you
and it couldn't be better

there are good days
there are catastrophes
but at our finest
we fly

they crash
we fly
they crash
we fly
