BODY ACTION (TRIPPIN' ON A WET FLOOR)

performed on:
Written and recorded in 1990, "Body Action" was one of the notorious songs rejected by Columbia Pictures for the soundtrack to the teen-oriented film "Diskobox." Director Matthew Meshekoff insisted that the theme (and hook for record buyers) be provided by Plaastik. At this point, the band was still uncertain about the direction of their new record -- in demo stages at the time -- and didn't want to let go of any of the songs that had already been written. So they composed and quickly recorded this one only to have it rejected because it was "too overtly sexual." With the band prepared to give up on the project, Columbia maintained that they wanted something from Plaastik and offered even more money. (Next Plaastik gave them two songs to choose from, the manic Information Tour leftover "Down with Your Motion," which was considered by Sony to be "too abstract," and a cover of the Velvet Underground's "I'm Not Too Sorry (Now That You're Gone)," condemned as "too downbeat.") The extremely primitive dance recording "Shakin' That Ass," the backing track of which is actually the early b-side "Funk" played backwards, ended up being the song that was finally accepted. In the end a soundtrack album wasn't even issued and the song can only be heard in the closing credits of the film.

For years it was wondered if at least part of this story was apocryphal, since no evidence of this song's existence or the Velvets cover ever showed up, but all that changed on the penultimate night of the Science tour in San Francisco, when the band, frustrated with the structured precision of the tour's setlists, performed twenty-three songs that had either never been performed live before or hadn't been in years. This was among them. It was identified with Jay Kay Ray's help after fans online found themselves clueless.

I went to see my baby at the fast food joint
I was in the mood for some action
All week had gone by, no action
Didn't look like much was in store
So I went to Wendy's that night

I went in and saw my baby
She was cleanin' up the floor
Weren't no customers around
So I watched her dancin' with the mop
It was the body action I needed

Trippin' on a wet floor
Feelin' like it's paradise
Breakin' and scratchin'
I ate a hearty meal
At Wendy's.

I had a single with cheese
Biggie fries
And a frosty
A chocolate frosty
And some body action.
