PINWHEEL BLOOD BOX
(released on Capitol in October 1997)
Plaastik's first major project upon the move to Capitol was to prepare this boxed set. The band had always made a point of keeping singles in print, but as soon as they left each label, the smaller-scale releases disappeared almost immediately. Singles like "This is Not Here" had been scarce for some time and very few fans by 1997 had ever even seen any of the Geffen-era singles, much less owned them. The solution was planned to be a synchronized pair of releases. The first would be a new reissue of FUN GOLDFISH TOYS, in print for the first time since 1984. This had become a holy grail for newer fans, who were only able to find cassette copies if they could track the EP down at all. The second was to be this four-disc set of all of the b-sides from each and every single starting with "The Middle of the Desert." (The b-sides from NO PARKING ANYTIME had been collected on the GOLDFISH reissue, and Plaastik claimed that they had no intention of ever releasing "Nachos" and "Funk" again.) However, the packaging design for this box was so elaborate that it ended up falling behind and was not issued until three months after SUPER FUN GOLDFISH TOYS.
The band wanted to make this set "fun," and they succeeded by designing it as if it was a board game. There were even gamepieces included, though no rules were provided. "Players can make their own rules," explained Nick gleefully in an interview. (There is a set of Monopoly-style "chance" cards included with the SUPER FUN GOLDFISH TOYS set, presumably to be used in conjunction with this. Almost hidden inside the cardboard tracklist is a mammoth booklet with band interviews regarding each specific track in the set.
The only problem was that hardcore fans who already owned the songs were not given anything extra, at least in terms of the music, although for many of them, the booket and wondrous package were enough, and in fact by this point very few people already had *everything* that made it to the box. Thankfully, Capitol and the band also managed to keep the pricetag under $50, which makes the set a real treasure for devoted fans.
