BREAKFAST
performed on:- PLAYTIME TOUR (1983)
- INFORMATION TOUR (1987)
- DIPLOMACY TOUR (1994)
No feedback, just reverb on the drums and a lot of power chords. This metallic rocker was another source of hatred for avant-garde purists. Indeed, most who hear the song today will recall acts like Soundgarden. It's probably the most commercial song they've recorded, though in recent years it's become quite a fan favorite, particularly after it appeared on the Information Tour in a funkified arrangement and on the Diplomacy shows both with a louder, less basic guitar sound (which showed up on the double-LP NOT UNPLUGGED) and in a stripped-down piano variation.
The latter was supposedly recorded in 1983 and was the take the band wanted on the album, but Stephen Hague liked the "power ballad" production better. (They made him remove the synthesizers.)
A thousand words
The car speeding by
In the upstairs window
Silhouettes through the night
Silhouettes
Too fast to see
I can't do it
Your future's on the table
In my office
By the telephone
I can start over
I can start over, yeah
Sun won't focus
It penetrates
I sit down for my coffee
Reading the papers
Reading the killing race
The killing race
I can start over, yeah
I can't die
