THE CHESSBOARD

performed on:
This is the song Nick Parker has accused Pearl Jam of ripping off in their "Better Man," which Eddie Vedder claims to have written when he was a teenager. In live performances, it was as conventional as "Breakfast"; on the album it's much quieter and loaded with enthused acoustic guitars, plus a ghostly keyboard provided by Kevin. At the very first performance of the song in 1982, it was an a cappella number performed solely by Kevin and Nick. The performance was poorly receieved. "The Chessboard" finally got its due in 1987, when Information performances transformed it into an electrifying anthem.
