CONFUSED PEOPLE

One of the strangest choices for a single in Plaastik's history, and one that nonetheless paid off. MCA executives were oddly entranced by this "song," which consists of just a string quartet and Jeff Jooce screaming his head off for four minutes. The label, ironically, was convinced this should be the third single. "I figured they'd just decided they'd made enough money off the album," a bemused Jooce later said. Amazingly, the song -- its video clip of torture and strife from around the world banned from MTV -- went higher than "Upstairs" on the chart. It was considered something of a novelty at the time, and basically everyone who listened to the radio in the spring of 1995 had to make the obligatory joke about the song.

YEAH BECAUSE IT'S ALL WATER IN THE CITY YOU KNOW AND THEY CUT ME WHEN I WAS BORN, CUT ME OFF BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW THE SCENE. IN THE CITY THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU PROTEST THE TOXIC WASTE DUMP WHEN YOU'RE LIVING IN IT ANYWAY. NOW I PERSONALLY CAN SAY THAT MY DOUBLEWIDE 24X24 FURNISHED FULLY LOADED AND ELECTRONICALLY PROFICIENT PAD IS A HOLE IN THE WALL IN SOME ALLEYWAY. SO I PRAY TO THE LORD, COME ON, LET'S KEEP TOGETHER 'CUZ WE GOTTA HAVE OUR KICKS OR ELSE THERE'S NO TOMORROW IN THE SHITHOUSE, KNOW WHAT I'M SAYIN'? YOU KEEP SAYING YOU KNOW WHAT THE TRUTH IS BUT I DON'T SEE YOU TRYING TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT THE NEXT DAY BRINGS IN A CORNFIELD. VIETNAM SURFERS HAVE THE BEST ABS.
