DO NOT FUCK

In the mid-'60s, Capitol Records and a few other companies used "duophonic sound" to spice up old monaural recordings. In essence this is "fake stereo," with the channel of the mono sound shifted slightly to the left while louder sounds pop over to the right. Plaastik must be the first band to do this intentionally. On "Do Not Fuck," an early live favorite which some feel was ruined by the anything-goes environment of the FUN GOLDFISH TOYS EP. Actually, the rendition here is fairly straightforward, with some urgent acoustic guitar work, mocking vocals, and a screaming solo, but the production isn't, with the volume shifting around at odd times and the channel rolling around incomprehensibly. The desired "compression" is also achieved by running the tape once, then overdubbing a second-generation copy over it slightly out-of-sync. The vocals were recorded separately and are loud, front, and center the entire time. Plaastik wanted this to be the single, but thanks to their choice of title and lyrics, it was not to be.

After being abandoned shortly after the band signed to Geffen, "Do Not Fuck" was in limbo for almost two decades. Eventually, it was an extremely popular cut in live performances at the Science Tour, during which it was lent new anthemic life. Many called for a re-recording; so far it hasn't happened.

A frequent criticism of the flawed 1997 rerelease of FUN GOLDFISH TOYS was the lack of a conventional recording of "Do Not Fuck," which would be easy to create simply by placing the mono backing track up front with the vocals. Fan-made mixes of this stripe have appeared on bootlegs.

I saw what you did
But we've got a system
It's between friends
Can you see the buffalo?
He's got nothing to hide

It just takes a slip of the needle
And they'll come rolling in
Lookin' in your longhouse
Straight to the orange toy chest
Straight up to the attic

So do not fuck with me
Do not fuck with me
And it'll be all right

So say goodbye to Hollywood
Come hold me and love me and
Tell me all those lies, boy
I been waitin' just for this
Got you in my headlights

Drive it to me, drive it again
All those lies that you told, boy
All those lies that you told, boy

Do not fuck with me
And it'll be all right
