EQUAL IDEAS

It's often been said that Plaastik's choice of "You" as the third single from FORTUNATE SMILES was a protest against CBS/Sony, but in fact it was Nick Parker's jealousy that made the decision. He scrapped plans for this song, sung by Janet, to be issued when he heard a fan saying, regarding this track's chorus, "I'd love it if Janet Kieran would say yes to me." Parker didn't like the idea of a million red-blooded American boys fantasizing about his girlfriend, so he insisted that "You" would be the single. This could, of course, be an apocryphal story since Nick told it himself at a 1994 show.

This is a much more conventional recording than "You," but it's still new territory for Plaastik with its soaring feedback amid big-band brass textures. The lyrics were partially improvised by Kieran. The inherently spontaneous feel of the song allowed the band to launch into jam mode in live performances.

There's been a wrongful death
But it's OK
I commit to my clients
Call me.

I'm the yes man
And I always say yes

Let me tell you my ideas
And then I'll hear yours
Because you and I
Are equals
With equal ideas

My brain's been wounded
Your doctor's dog bit me
And it bit a nerve
But now your stomach's in my head

I got no time, man
I got no time

I'm the yes man
And I always say yes
