FOG

An example of a song that never worked, "Fog" is a song that is listed in credits on the SALT liner notes but was excised from the album. Several band members have admitted some ambivalence toward the song, written by Nick Parker and Brian Eno. A fan asked about it before a show in Detroit on 7/30/87 and Nick described the song at length before performing it in the set by special request. He called it an ambient synth-driven piece and said that the band enjoyed the sound of the recording and found it fun to play but felt the lyrics ("eat some chicken with me") and melody were amateurish and put it aside for that reason. The live cut was an abbreviated acoustic take. It was played live one more time, with a full-on electric arrangement, and was overhauled and rewritten as "Breathe" on the OLIVES & SUCH album.

When the fog lifts
I'll be there to hold your hand

These are confusing times
Bacon eats people
Cars produce trucks
I can't find my own leg

Eat some chicken with me
Until the fog lifts
Chicken is good
You are good
I like you

When the fog lifts
I'll be there to hold your hand
