Believe it or not, "Flashback" was essentially introduced as a live -- ready for this? -- surf instrumental called "Hat." The beginning of this studio version sheds light on how this happened. The bass melody is sequenced through keyboards and the pace slowly builds until a drumroll leads the band into "Hawaii Five-O" mode. Although he played with backward loops of the second half, it was mostly the almost ambient opening bit that interested Brian Eno, who remixed and drastically changed it for the ROSS VERDICT album, on which it became "Flashback." The original found its way to the "This is Not Here" single.
