HOUSE IN THE FOREST
performed on:- INFORMATION TOUR (1987)
- DIPLOMACY TOUR (1994)
- SCIENCE TOUR (2001)
Nick Parker said in 2000, "I don't know that we would ever play a show without 'House in the Forest,'" and indeed only one setlist has not included what is possibly Plaastik's most beloved composition among major fans, aside perhaps from the same album's 'Window to the World." The band genuinely loves playing it and is supremely proud of the recording as well. Even the Science Tour arrangement was faithful. Mitch Easter: "We did it without resorting to what's expected of a really strong ballad. It's a very enigmatic recording, lots of falsetto and a very distinct guitar sound." That guitar sound is Janet Kieran's 12-string, recorded backwards except for a loud solo in the bridge section.
"House in the Forest" was the second release from MR. EVIL BREAKFAST and the first Plaastik single on Geffen not to crack the top 40. It did crawl to #47 and did well on modern rock charts, while the video -- a straightforward but atmospheric film of the band playing the song by a lake at night -- received far more airplay than "The Middle of the Desert." This song was used to great effect in Edward Keefer's Oscar-winning film about lesbian bankers in the 1940s, Giving It My All.
come with me to the crib
cower in the sheets
where I'll keep you safe
from the watchful eyes of men
your secret's safe with me
your secret's safe with me
come with me to the room
by the fireplace
where I'll hold you
and help you remember
your secret's safe with me
your secret's safe with me
look to her future
look to her future
look to her future
look
come with me to the house
in the forest
where we'll always stay
just you and me
your secret's safe with me
in the house in the forest
