This 2002 Nick/Janet duet is an unfinished demo, missing many of the lyrics that have since been heard at live shows and in an overdubbed version on the "Ex" single. The song was nevertheless in the running for CHILD in a band arrangement (as yet unreleased) by the end of 2003; the following summer, it had been excised. The overdubbed demo makes the point by many accounts that a slightly greater amount of energy expended could have made LOVE a masterpiece or at least a more commercially satisfying endeavor. "I Thought" was well-received when played live electrically in 2004, but Nick was unhappy with those performances and changed the arrangement slightly for the 2005 shows.
