Nick Parker decided well before the recording sessions for HERD POLITICS began that he wanted to cover the Velvet Underground's "Jesus." His early demo, frequently duplicated live, featured him on piano alone in a straightforward version. For the album, a slide guitar and strings were added to make it a sort of subtly dramatic country-rock piece, a real barroom potboiler. Janet Kieran was chosen to sing lead.
