SCIENCE

(released on Capitol in May 2001)

Sporting a stunning cover by graphic designer Ross Maute (making it the first Plaastik album not designed by Nick Parker), SCIENCE was largely Christina Singleton's attempt (a year and a half before she'd depart from the band) to rearrange the massive amount of session material from the 1999 sessions into coherent pop music. She cowrote all of the songs with Nick Parker (now Jesus Killer) and was mostly responsible for showing Flood the way with regard to selection, mastering and sequencing, while Jesus had a field day with FUN. Vocals were overdubbed in a chaotic three-day session in January 2001. Singleton also organized the subsequent tour, Plaastik's most elaborate and stagy goround to date, with huge video screens, rigid setlists, and Killer playing up a larger-than-life persona. For more details on the making of these albums, see FUN.

SCIENCE was generally regarded as inferior to FUN but is undoubtedly more ideal for casual listening. Many fans criticized the overblown, pretentious nature of the synth-heavy tracks and accused the band of attempting to become New Order. Just about everyone agreed it was an improvement on CARTOONS, but not many people were entirely happy with the direction of the group by now. SCIENCE hit #9 on the album charts.
