MY FRIEND

A true oddity in a number of ways, "My Friend" is credited to the entire band including Tina, but the band proclaims it is mostly Jay's song, fleshed out by Nick and Janet, who sing it together on the album. It was the first song written in 2000 specifically for the project that became FUN and SCIENCE, but like "Look (Time)," it was abandoned after those LPs took shape. Ironically, it was also one of the last songs actually completed for the record, with rewrites (Tina had contributed a number of ideas at the SCIENCE sessions and it's reasonable to assume she did the same during the early months of work on CHILD) taking place as late as fall 2003. The final take used on CHILD was put down in June 2004.

Though critics praised the song's easy eroticism (Nick called it "a bridge to LOVE"), fans found it overproduced and pretentious. It has been performed acoustically at live shows, with one show presenting a unique arrangement of Jay and Kevin on guitars and Nick and Janet singing without instruments. Early press for CHILD constantly confused "My Friend" and "My Field."

life is funny, my friend
i'll never forget
what we used to do
what we used to play
what we used to touch

my friend was mine
and mine alone
the first time
the second time
the third

on the swing
inside, by the window
in the pool
i found out about my friend

all grown up now
nothing is the same
but I'll never forget
when you were my friend
and you made me yours
