OLDER
performed on:
The only original song attempted at the sessions for ON SUCH A NIGHT that didn't make it to the final album, out of fear that it was too similar to "Swim." The arrangement is indeed not much different except that "Older" is a much more rocking composition, and it came off much better live, replacing "Swim" in setlists soon after the 2001 tour began. At one show Nick introduced this as a song called "Why I Hate My Father."
where i live it's dark at night
fog runs along the road and
the houses and streetlights,
perfectly lined up with it.
when i look out my window
the orange light hits a spot
in the road, there's a hole there.
i wonder what caused that?
i wonder when that streetlight was put there?
i wonder when the road was paved?
who did these things?
where did these ideas come from?
a long time ago the moon filled me with hope.
now all i feel is the coming day
and the things it brings, and the past.
not upset, i just wonder sometimes.
there's water near my house.
it's so close and it flows and flows.
it gives life and takes it.
strengthens us, weakens.
men walk along the marina at night.
where the lights shine on and on.
men walk there. their lives...
and i am here, spent, unaware of them,
them unaware of me.
everything is filled with song,
some bright, some chilling,
and some that bring dread.
everything i remember, it drowns me.
the things we live with, we're drowning.
it's time to leave.
but then i think about all the dreams.
dreams i'm sitting with, dreams that surround me.
there's no darkness here. the moon is a dream.
the streetlights. the road. the waterway.
signs and shows and buildings and ideas.
the marina. the mens' lives. and i think of these.
all of these, and suddenly the hope comes back.
share it with me.
