PAY ME

performed on:
  • DIPLOMACY TOUR (1994)
  • CHILD junket (2004-05)

This is Plaastik's first serious venture into folk rock, with its storytelling style and ringing, jangling 12-string guitar work. It was a pleasant surprise on an unusually long LP that kept ROSS from wearing out its welcome. Many felt that this and the Byrds cover on the "This is Not Here" single pointed to a new direction for the band, but FORTUNATE SMILES did not follow up on this, nor indeed has anything since then.

4th grade, I loaned Tom a quarter
said he'd pay me back Monday
one thousand Mondays later
I'm still waiting

ten years after that
bought my secret crush an ice cream cone
said she'd pay me back next week
and be my best friend forever
she forgot me

must be nice to be able to forget

yesterday I loaned my friend
five hundred bucks for rent
today I picked up the newspaper
turns out he killed himself
this morning
