RAINBOW KINGDOM
performed on:- early gigs (1980-81)
- GOLDFISH TOUR (1982)
- PLAYTIME TOUR (1983)
Stark and seductive, this minmalistic tune, originally performed as an instrumental and included in that version on the "Nachos" single, is the first released Plaastik song on which Janet Kieran takes the lead vocal. She whispers the lyrics in a tone to match the hushed subtlety of the backing track, a lonely synth line that according to legend is the melody of a Journey hit slowed down and played backwards. (Nick Parker claims it is an Atari 2600 sample.)
The first few live performances, and the original released version, had a dance beat and lots of keyboard loops. All of this was stripped for the EP and replaced with Janet's vocal, recorded in a bathroom for maximum echo. Otherwise, it's the same recording. The dance tones remained in live performances but the song hasn't appeared in a set since 1983.
Dance it around, dance again
I can't go on, you go on
Rainbow kingdom, it's where I live
I don't pay rent, I just steer clear
Life is okay, let me be
I won't die here, I won't die here
I won't die here, I want to die
Rainbow kingdom, it's where I live
