ROSE
performed on:
One of the stronger LOVE tracks, this 2002 demo became the first single from the album and -- in rerecorded full band variation -- a top ten hit, peaking at #5. The hit was a fluke, but it struck a chord with the public, to the total shock of everyone in and out of the band. It was Plaastik's biggest hit in seven years, and unfortunately, probably the only hit single in history to hurt an album, since word of mouth on the quality of LOVE led most casual fans to buy the "Rose" single instead of the LOVE album, while those who did spring for LOVE came away disappointed with the hushed acoustic version they got. It was, in any case, the finest maxi-single Plaastik had released in some time and deserved its success perhaps more than LOVE would have. Alternate demos of "Rose" are included on the single, each radically different and clearly reflective of the fact that the possibilities of the song were still being explored at the time.
The video features the band hanging out in a meat factory. "Rose" has proven popular in theater shows, in both acoustic and electric versions.
jump on me at nighttime
tell me nothing is OK
i am in love
that is all that matters
i'll cast you aside
i'll strangle you tonight
but we are in love
and that is all that matters
you make me feel
like i'm a thorn
you make me feel
like you can throw me away
all the things you take away
all the things you accept
i know how to persuade you
i know how to butter you up
i know how to keep you
you take the abuse
you sort of like the abuse
'cause you are in love
that is all that matters
and you will do it forever
