SHOULD CAN WILL

performed on:
Yet another MR. EVIL BREAKFAST track that was actually among the first Plaastik songs performed, "Should Can Will" carries the obvious influence of New York new wave and the Velvet Underground, with its snakelike, amped-up rhythm guitar lines and character-driven lyrics. It was, in fact, played at the first-ever Plaastik show on May 9, 1980 and, aside from some neglect on the early parts of the Goldfish Tour and later shows on the Playtime Tour, was almost always in the setlist until the 2001 Science Tour, on which it was never played. The band was, in fact, rather tired of the song when it came time to record the second album, but Mitch Easter encouraged them to put it on tape and the band put in an enthusiastic performance. It almost didn't make the album, however, due to some band members protesting some unknown problem in the mix. This was corrected and the album was released as planned, although plans to issue the track as a single were scrapped.

You know this kid he know the score
Ain't no money rakin' whore
He bought beef jerky at the store
Chews it thoughtfully, looks bored

Yeah, baby, he don't care 'bout doin' what he should
Doesn't give a shit about doin' what he can
But someday he'll know why she wish he would
He's just a kid (one day he will)

Let me hear it from the ladies

Now she sits and puts on her shades
Watches her TV, sees some police raids
Sits on the corner, lies about her age
Looks up at the sky and begins to fade

'Cause y'know she ain't too sure how to be what she should
Got nothin' in the world, can't be what she can
But she wonder if maybe someday she will
Right now she still a kid

They ridin' around in their bigass van
Don't know where the hell they goin', man
Sent out for the garbage and away they ran
Life was hard then, harder now in this lonely land

'Cause they got no directions to get where they should
Don't have enough gas to go where they can
And they can't see how this takes 'em where they will
They're not kids
