Except perhaps "Do Not Fuck," this is the closest thing to a coherent pop song on FUN GOLDFISH TOYS; as a result, it was issued as a single in advance of the EP's release in an edited version. With an insistent, menacing bass line and an aimless buzzing lead guitar line that stretches throughout the entire song, it's still not exactly commercial, and the keyboard insanity in the middle doesn't help matters much. Particularly remarkable on this track is Kevin Keys' steady drumming, which keeps the flow perfectly in a song that moves several times from 7/4 to 11/4 time and back. The single did not chart.
Ironically, the song was substantially less far-out at the band's ordinarly wild live shows. Goldfish Tour shows recast the song as a Ramones-like rampage. All the textures were, not surprisingly, too much to keep up with in a live setting. Plaastik has blamed this on the fact that half the originals on FUN GOLDFISH TOYS were actually written in, with and for the studio and don't function so well outside of it. Nonetheless, despite appearing only rarely on the Playtime Tour, it was pulled out often in encores at the 1994 performances, adding more feedback and piano for mood, and almost nightly on the Science Tour, with ambient keyboard theatrics. The band was fond enough of the more emotional '94 arrangement to record it for the 1997 MEAT best-of compilation.
The straightforward music video, the band's first, is just Plaastik lip-syncing the song on cheap videotape in front of a brick wall with projections of Ed Wood's Glen or Glenda in the background.
Some hipster with a shoulderbag
Cornered me in the street
He pointed up at the clouds
He asked "How beautiful is the moon?"
That's when I ran.
And I climbed over the fence
But I was still in the world.
I couldn't get away from the boy
Wearing a newspaper hat
He told me the sky
Is drooling with contempt
It's in the paper today
In the sky
In the sky
Silk is now a food
Well, the change is news
He's two percent body fat
The rest is just rags
The man I didn't know
Was giving me signals
As if I am his cohort
Strange, futile activity
The fire extinguisher is in a box
In my locked pantry
Even with a skeleton key
You can't put out the fire
Can't put out the fire
In the sky
In the sky
