Even though Nick Parker has called it a "bad Lou Reed impersonation," this remains a beloved composition and one of Plaastik's favorite songs to play live. The Stones-like riff and the sneering, smitten vocals create a true rock & roll landscape. Mitch Easter's emphasis on percussion makes the song all the more evocative (and mysterious, which is something the Stones rarely were). Like much of MR. EVIL BREAKFAST, "Southern Eye" dates back to very early Plaastik gigs; it was first played in 1981 in a virtually identical arrangement. It was not played on the Playtime Tour but was rediscovered during rehearsals for this album.
Introducing the song in concert once, Parker said "I have no idea why this wasn't a single." Rumors exist that the band pushed it as the first single from NO PARKING ANYTIME but Stephen Hague disliked it and never recorded it properly.
I don't have anything to prove
I don't want yer money, don't want yer love
But baby, can't you see that you're the trouble
Can't you see that my feathers are ruffled
When you look at me with those southern eyes
Ah, honey, don't ya know it makes me shine
Ooh yeah, lookin' at me with those southern eyes
Like a child... you just don't it makes you shine
Now I know baby, yer a complicated woman
You got things to do and places to be
Got a life to live, young lady, and I know
You ain't got no time for somebody like me
But then I see you walkin' down that avenue
And the colors stick into me, the brown and the blue
I wanna be your best friend, I don't need a wife
Just wanna feel you inside and out, just ONCE IN MY LIFE
'Cause baby when you look at me with those southern eyes
Oh honey you take me down to Texas and deep in the sea
And I can feel the sun lookin' into those southern eyes
'Cause you walk and talk like a mistress and you know I can't even breathe
oh baby yeah
She comes up from Kansas and she plays in the field
And goes down into the south, them girls grow up fast
Up north she dances and listens to her radio
You know she wams up the love and makes it last
I ain't attracted to you
Just want you f orever, honey
I ain't in love with you
Just need you like no other
