I DON'T THINK IT'S THAT DEEP

A blast from the past, this was one of Nick Parker's half-assed originals from the first crop of Plaastik shows. He replaced a verse about Linda Ronstadt with one about Madonna and brought it to the studio. In live performances before and after, it was a massive punk guitar explosion. In the studio the band decided to slow it down, and the result was a surprisingly delicate Miles Davis sort of cool-jazz exploration, with Parker chiming in with calm, reflective vocals despite the silliness of his lyrics, which are hard to hear anyway. The Diplomacy Tour returned the song to its new wave origins.

well you might think
when they write about the weather
it's metaphor for the hawks and doves
the hatfields and mccoys
the repubs and the demmies

well
I don't think it's that deep
I don't think it's that deep
'cause people are dumb
and why should they care?

you see your friends
they moan and groan about the times
about family and friends, death and life
but are their real concerns
abortion and justice and famine?

I don't think it's that deep
I don't think they're that deep
'cause they think famine
is a ride at disneyland

they don't know

madonna says
she makes a point
about how and why sex sells
about the way we look at ourselves
and the way we look at women

but I don't think it's that deep
I don't think she's that deep
she knows I don't think so
and madonna don't care
'cause she's richer than Jesus
what else can I say?
