In June 1980, Plaastik performed this song numerous times to unenthusiastic audiences before retiring it. It was written by Nick Parker a few months before the band played its first gig, and because it is such a delightful and undeniable pop song, it clashed with some of the more ragged material in the setlists at the time. As a result, the band was slightly embarrassed by it at the time, but when they grew disgusted with their off-kilter material by the end of the Goldfish Tour, they dragged it out once again. It most certainly would have been a popular number at the Playtime Tour, but it was never played, and had the band released it as a single, it's almost universally felt that it would have been as successful as the cuts from NO PARKING ANYTIME.
The song uses more synthesizers than almost anything else on the album, and in fact the electric guitar line that is the basis for the song in most live performances is absent in the studio cut. The synths used are all ancient ones found in the studio... a Moog, a run-down Fairlight, and even a mellotron. The most beloved live renditions of this fan favorite, widely recognized by critics and followers as perhaps Plaastik's finest song, are from the Diplomacy Tour, in which both a stripped-down acoustic version and a percussive, loud feedback-ridden rock version were regularly featured.
Longhairs running in the wind
Used to see the cars go by
But now my muse doesn't come around
What's there to keep me alive?
The earthquakes rumbled in and out
The rain just washed away the shame
My little bird has flown away
To me she spoke and only me
But now it's all changed forever
And the venom cuts deep and hard
Guess it doesn't really matter now
You were always my window to the world
Your laughs defined me, gave me strength
I guess there's no reason to cry
What we shared will never depart
And I'm not afraid of what's to come
The years have passed the world by
We break under the weight of time
I'm ready, because I've seen so much
It was me in you... my window to the world
Not sure how many days I'll live
But all I know is I'll see you soon
You were all that I needed to see to feel
Bless the storms that brought us together
I'll stay with you
